Here are the progress meters and updates for my various projects. The current writing project is listed first. I’ve provided some quick links if you want to see status of other projects. Once launched, I delete the progress bar (once I remember to do it.)
2/20/2018: Another good day. About 1800 words written and a couple chapters reviewed. Was able to type today, so that was nice. The story gathers steam!
2/19/2018: 1700 words yesterday and 1800 today. Been dictating chapters to let my hand rest. Good stuff and good progress. Still in the beginning of the novel. Lots of stuff to get set up and explore. Some of it will get tossed, some will stay, and new stuff will get written later. But for now, it’s all intriguing and I’ve got questions I’m looking forward to answering.
2/17/2018: Only 1800 words today. A bit of an RSI flare up due to too much mousing the past few days. Best to let it rest than to push through and make it worse. But a good bit of writing and fun revelation that I was not expecting about one of the cats!
2/16/2018: A decent day, but it could have been better. But I got 2100 words written and a couple chapters important I had written for the last book that fit better in this one. I had to invest a lot of time the past two days in updating the series bible for Starside Saga. I had let it get a bit dusty. But now I’m diligently adding all the characters and places and everything else I can think of. It’s been very helpful already. I’ve also added a few things to my map sketch. Overall, I’m feeling pretty good about this stuff.
2/15/2018: A solid day of writing, with just over 3k words. Would have been more, but I’ve been diligently updating and tidying my series bible. Also, today I had to sketch a map of the world outside of Starside. It was pretty fun and inspiring.
2/14/2018: Officially started writing book six today. A little over 2k words. Not too shabby. These things usually start a little slowly as I feel my way into the story. There are so many potential entry points to this one, I just had to start. Will this be the first chapter when I’m done? I have absolutely no idea. No outline. Just a lot of notes about what I call “open loops” which are questions and hints that I placed in previous books and stories.
2/12/2018: This project is ready for the editor. But first they have to finish going through book 5. I’m building a backlog!
2/11/2018: It was very quick to do a first revision today. The first 20k words are the existing Thief of Sparks novella. The second half, about 25k words a Part 2 that will expand Thief into a small novel. And I LOVE it. Adventure, humor, pathos, talking cats, and loads of trouble for Kila Sigh.
2/10/2018: Done. First draft is done four days early. Wrote 7,842 words today. Just had to make a run for the ending once I saw it coming. This will make for a nice, short novel. Very pleased. Revision pass #1 will begin tomorrow.
2/09/2018: Another awesome day of writing. I would keep going but my hands are starting to ache from typing so much. Gotta take care of them and let them rest. Over 5k written today and the story is just flying along. So much fun!
2/08/2018: Holy smokes was this a great (and looong) day of writing. But I wrote just over 6000 words, and probably more if I take into consideration some stuff I deleted. This project will move quickly, and it will be awesome! Right now my eyes are blurring becasue of looking at my computer screen all day. Need a break. Back at it tomorrow!
2/07/2018: Today I basically reviewed some notes and jotted down some ideas about how I want approach this project. It is a Starside project, but it is not book six. I need to squeak this in during February (hopefully only February) and then get on with book six which I think will be about as long as book five. Anyway, this is not a Starside Tale. So what could it be? Hmmmmmmmmm.
2/07/2018: The book is in my editor’s hands now. The past three days were absolutley full of re-reading and making my final markups. Took about five hours to enter all those edits and now the book is done except for the final editing/proofing passes. But I do not expect major changes from this point on. I really needed that final read-through as I uncovered a few opportunities to add some depth to a few scenes and tie up a loose end I’d missed. Interestingly, the thing I forgot was also something one of the characters kept (conveniently) forgetting to address. Funny how that works. While this book is in this phase, I’ll be working on super-secret starside project above. 🙂
2/04/2018: Finished the revision pass this afternoon. Fantastic. I can’t believe how well this book turned out. 95k words, tho. That’s much longer than the last book. Oh, well. Now I’ll print a copy and begin another read through. It’s coming along great!
2/03/2018: This revision is just flying. I put in a ton of hours today and got through another 41k words. I had expected to do a lot more tweaking and tidying, but this story is barreling along just fine. Some huge mercus scenes today. I love magic battles! I should finish this pass tomorrow unless the Superbowl is interesting. I don’t have a team in the game, so I’m mainly watching for the spectacle.
2/02/2018: Started a revision pass on the manuscript to day. Got through 34k words. The progress bar is correct. I’m already 1/3 of the way through this pass. But that’s because it’s already had a couple revision passes in the past as I re-read to built momentum. Anyway, it’s reading very smoothly and I’m not having to do too much adding in. A few scenes have caught be my surprise by how well they foreshadow later events. I enjoy this part of the process very much because I can simply enjoy the story and creatively adjust things here and there.
2/01/2018: First draft of The Force of Destiny is done! Holy smokes this ended up going long. I hope I can thin it out a bit on the next pass. But I really like this book and I love how it ended. Fun, fun, fun!
1/31/2018: Almost done. So, so close. If the dog hadn’t escaped the yard and tramped all over creation with me chasing him, I would have finished today. Still, a decent afternoon of writing got me close.
1/30/2018: Aside from having seven vials of blood drawn for some tests, it was a good day. Late start to the writing, but once I got going, the momentum was totally on my side. Any writing day that yields over 3k words is a gold star day for me. But today I wrote 5,384 words. A great day of work and I’m almost to the ending. I feel very, very close to wrapping the first draft. I think (I hope) it’ll come in under 90k words.
1/29/2018: A super good day of over 4k words and epicness continues. I feel the ending fast-approaching. There’s going to be some adding-in needed on the next pass through the book, but I like doing that stuff.
1/28/2018: Amazing day. Big battle scene and lots of drama. What fun! Mercusine stuff flying left and right, huge monsters, wet cats, heroes tempted by darkness, and the whole world at stake. Every kind of thing I love in a good fantasy novel.
1/27/2018: another good day of writing. Another big chapter complete. The final battle is coming and mercus is flying in all directions. Who will be victorious? And what does victory even mean!
1/26/2018: A solid day of writing today. Knocked out a couple chapters as I fill in a side-character’s storyline. This stuff will all come together at the ending, so it’s much-needed work. Had a lot of fun and learned a lot about mercusine artifacts today.
1/25/2018: Some good work on a new chapter today. A bit slow going as I’m doing some deep world-building in this section. Fun, but slow. Anyway, today’s words were composed on an IBM Selectric II typewriter. So cool!
1/24/2018: Finally reached the end of the manuscript. Found where I’d gone wrong and cut off that chunk. Now I have a clear shot toward the ending. The wordcount had gone backward due to lopping off 5000+ words, but some of those might come back in some form. Very excited about how this book is turning out!
1/21/2018: The book is coming along. I had several huge life events interrupt my progress on this novel, but they are behind me for the most part and I’m back at work on it. I’m in the process of re-loading the story into my memory. I’ve re-read the manuscript and made a ton of notes. I’m still not sure of the final word count. The Raven Throne was 71k words. As you can see, this one is a bit longer than that and the ending is not written yet.
The title of Book 5 will be The Force of Destiny!
